This was a short week before the holiday break. We attended a lovely performance by The Oxford Center for Dance and held our monthly auction. Congratulations to this little guy who won the coveted Pokemon prize in the auction. Have a safe and happy Thanksgiving!

To celebrate American Education Week, the students in room 109 invited our parents to help us make kites. This activity supported our Air and Weather unit. After following directions to construct a kite, we flew them in the afternoon to explore wind resistance. Guest readers from the high school athletics department joined us on Wednesday. We loved hearing them read and the kids enjoyed asking them tons of questions about what it is like to be an athlete. Thursday afternoon, the entire building read together at 2:00. The love of learning is alive and well at Elk Ridge!

Our reading skill is Author's Purpose. We are reading a story about Abraham Lincoln and learning facts about how he helped bring our country together. In writing, the children are learning to write explicit directions. Pictured below, the children wrote step by step instructions to teach me how to do a cartwheel. Finally, we followed directions to construct a pinwheel. We learned that a pinwheel is much like an anemometer. We can measure wind speed by counting the rotations. ***Our photographer is Johnny S.*** The marking period ended this week, but the fun never ends in room 109! This week, we had a special teacher while I was in a meeting... Mr Hayes! He taught us how a straw actually works. In reading, our focus for the week was cause and effect. Our personal narratives are published and ready to share. As part of our Air and Weather Unit, we used bubbles to prove that air moves at different speeds and directions, moves around corners, and behaves differently in a doorway. We ended our week with a special sing along, the monthly auction and Halloween activities. ***Our photographer for the week was Jordan P*** - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - El período de calificación terminó esta semana, pero la diversión nunca termina en la habitación 109 !
